Dr. Cristina Stephens publishes an article in the journal of Cancer Survivorship

KENNESAW, Ga. (Mar 22, 2016) — Dr. Stephens led a team of researchers at the American Cancer Society to publish the article “Gender differences in Associations Between Cancer-Related Problems and Relationship Dissolution among Cancer Survivors” in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship: Research and Practice (impact factor 3.3). Using data from the American Cancer Society’s Study of Cancer Survivors-II - the largest known study of psycho-social aspects of cancer survivorship to date - the paper examined associations between specific cancer-related problems and the odds of relationship breakup following a cancer diagnosis, and whether these associations differed between male and female cancer survivors at the multivariate level. Results indicated that female and male survivors differed in the extent to which emotional or financial/employment problems attributed to the cancer diagnosis were associated with the likelihood of reporting relationship dissolution. In addition, the study confirmed previous findings suggesting women’s slightly higher vulnerability to relationship dissolution post-diagnosis when compared to men.
