SOCM Alum Wins Emmy

KENNESAW, Ga. (Jun 22, 2020)miguel2020BOSTON – KSU graduate Miguel Santiesteban Rangel, a bilingual multimedia journalist and news reporter with Telemundo of New England and NBC 10 Boston, has won his first Emmy award.

Santiesteban was the 2018 Outstanding Senior in Journalism and Emerging Media major for the School of Communication and Media at Kennesaw State University. He had been nominated in four categories for the Boston/New England Emmy Awards, for work he did as a reporter for Telemundo New England, a regional Spanish language branch of NBCUniversal.

In February 2020, he was promoted to work out of NBC News’ new state-of-the-art NBCU Boston Media Center for Telemundo, NBC10 Boston, NECN. He reports in Spanish and English on the issues the Hispanic community faces, breaking news stories, and weather-related stories.

On Saturday, June 20, he received the Emmy in the category of Video Journalist – No Time Limit, for a composite of two stories called “Hard-working Dominicans: Stories of Success.”

“In one of the stories I featured a barbershop owner who helped other 12 barbers to open barbershops in Boston and the second report was about two teenagers who traveled to Connecticut chasing the dream of becoming professional baseball players,” Santiesteban said.

He also was nominated in the categories of deadline reporting and for human interest feature reporting.  He was one of three Telemundo field reporters nominated in the team coverage category for a story on a winter storm.

The NATAS Boston/New England Chapter presented the 43rd Boston/New England Emmy Awards as a virtual event.

Santiesteban’s award was one of three given to Telemundo New England, which were the first Emmys earned by the station.

“This award is for my mom and my brother, my whole family, my American parents, my Telemundo family, my Alma mater KSU, all of my mentors, and for every single person who has supported me during the start of my career,” Santiesteban said. “I also want to dedicate this award to my grandfather who passed away last week in Colombia.”

Santiesteban, a native of Colombia, was hired initially by Telemundo New England as a bureau reporter in Hartford, Connecticut, and was nominated last year for an Emmy in the deadline news reporting category.

He joined NBC-Telemundo shortly after he graduated KSU magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Emerging Media in May 2018. He minored in Crisis Preparedness.

While at KSU, he served as president of the KSU Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and was selected by the faculty as the outstanding senior in journalism for 2018.

The Boston/New England chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is one of 20 regional chapters for NATAS and covers the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont and most of Connecticut. The chapter released its list of finalists on April 30.
