The book is a collection of brief essays presented as an out-of-sequence glossary that explores adoption terminology from the viewpoint of an adopted person. Fellow alumnus Christopher Martin, 2018 Georgia Author of the Year in memoirsaid of the book,"That we might not know who we truly are--that we might be wandering 'detached from the earth itself, from the world of living things,' as Pickell hauntingly writes--is a truth this book embraces and with which it struggles, in which any reader, regardless offamily history, can find kinship."

“Fierce and eloquent,” said Caitríona Palmer, author ofAn Affair with My Mother,“Karen Pickellhandles the delicate material of her own life with searing honesty and precision, while simultaneously calling out the grief, loss, and sense of abandonment that is the reality of adoption.”

“None of this would have been possible for me without the knowledge I gained from going through the MAPW program. I am thankful to all my professors and classmates at KSU,” Karensaid. More information about Karen and her work can be found by linking below.
