CHSS Homecoming 2019

CHSS Homecoming 2019

The 2019 CHSS Homecoming was our biggest yet! The day started with fun interactive games and activities for kids and the kid at heart. Followed by a humorous and informative presentation by Dr. Tom Okie, Associate Professor of History Education and History called “Everything is Peaches Down in Georgia? How the Georgia Peach Became a Southern Symbol,” based on his book The Georgia Peach: Culture, Agriculture, and Environment in the American South. Finally, we had an awards ceromony highlighting some of our amazing  students and alumni.

William Thomas Okie is the author of “The Georgia Peach: Culture, Agriculture, and Environment in the American South.” His book received the Bell Award in 2018, which is a publication award given to the best book on Georgia history published in the previous year. Dr. Okie’s book explores how the peach emerged as a commercial crop and as a cultural icon, despite the fact that this non-native fruit has all but disappeared as a Georgia crop. The book explores how the myth of the Georgia peach was created and its staying power as a cultural icon.
