NEA Calendar

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awards grants to nonprofit organizations, fellowships to creative writers and translators, and partnership agreements to state arts agencies and regional arts organizations in support of arts projects in thousands of communities across the country.  Grants for organizations and partnership agreements both require matching funds while fellowships for individuals do not. The grants are listed according to the calendar month when they are usually offered.   • Translation Projects

    Translation Projects enable recipients to translate work of prose, poetry, or drama from other languages into English. Non-matching grants are for, depending upon the artistic excellence and merit of the project.     • Maximum award amount: $12,500 or $25,000

  • The Art Works through project-based funding support artistically excellent projects that celebrate our creativity and cultural heritage, invite mutual respect for differing beliefs and values, and enrich humanity. All grants require a nonfederal match of at least 1 to 1, and grants cannot exceed 50% of the total cost of the project. There are two application deadlines: February and July.     Art Works: Artist Communities

    This area provides assistance to artist communities for projects that encourage and nurture the development of individual artists and foster and inspire their creative processes. The primary purpose of the artist communities (an organization) is to provide residencies to the artists both at urban and rural settings.     Art Works: Arts Education

    Arts Education funding is focused on students. Projects are for pre-K-12 students (Direct Learning), the educators and artists who support them (Professional Development), and the schools and communities that serve them (Collective Impact). All three projects will utilize and test innovative strategies, or scale up proven methodologies, for increasing access to arts education. There are two application deadlines: February and July.     Art Works: Dance

    The National Endowment for the Arts assists all forms of professional dance (for example, ballet, modern dance, jazz, folkloric, tap, hip-hop, African, Indian) by funding dance companies and presenters, service organizations, festivals, convenings, community engagement, education activities, and projects of all sizes. These projects can be for any stage of the artistic process including creation, commissioning, presentations, touring, training, residencies, and access to the arts. There are two application deadlines: February and July.     Art Works: Design

    The National Endowment for the Arts recognizes design's ever-present impact on society by funding activities that encourage, preserve, and disseminate the best in American and global design. The design field encompasses many disciplines including, but not limited to, architecture, communications and graphic design, fashion design, historic preservation, industrial and product design, interior design, landscape architecture, planning, universal design, social impact design, rural design, and urban design.     The folk and traditional arts invite artistically excellent projects that address any of the activities, but are not limited to, music, dance, crafts, and oral expression.     Art Works: Literature supports two general project types: 1) Literary publishing projects (February Art Works Deadline): these projects focus on print and/or digital literary magazines and independent and university presses that publish poetry, fiction, drama, and/or creative nonfiction by contemporary writers and translators. 2) Audience and professional development projects (July Art Works Deadline): these projects focus on local and/or national activities designed to promote and develop practitioners of, and audiences for, literature. (Projects that are primarily focused on publishing and/or distributing books or journals should be submitted at the other Art Works deadline). Generally, an organization is limited to one application per year in the Art Works category.     Art Works: Local Arts Agencies

    The work of Local Arts Agencies can cover a wide range of activity, depending on the dynamics of the community. Project types eligible for support include Programming and Services to the Field. Sub-granting proposals by a Local Arts Agency to support programming or services to the field by its constituents are also eligible, with additional applicant requirements. All project types are accepted at two deadlines (February and July). Generally, an organization is limited to one application per year in the Art Works category.     Art Works: Media Arts 

    Art Works: Media Arts projects at all phases that support creation, exhibition, education, and distribution of historic and contemporary artworks in all genres and forms that use electronic media, film, and technology (analog & digital; old and new) as an artistic medium or a medium to broaden arts appreciation and awareness (of any discipline). Art Works applications will be accepted at two deadlines: February and July. For February deadlines, eligible projects types include exhibition, presentation, distribution, and preservation activities. For July deadlines, eligible project types include creation, education, and resources for artistic and professional development. An organization may submit only one application in the Art Works category, with this exception:  Any organization may submit more than one application in the Art Works category through the Media Arts discipline for the July deadline only.     The National Endowment for the Arts supports the commissioning, development, presentation, and professional recordings of new or existing operatic works; professional artist development programs and artist residencies; and projects by service organizations.     The National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) and poetry to published creative writers that enable recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement.     The Challenge America category offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that are focused and extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations – those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.     The National Endowment for the Arts supports the commissioning, development, presentation, and professional recordings of new or existing operatic works; professional artist development programs and artist residencies; and projects by service organizations.     Projects should be multi- or cross-disciplinary in nature and may include work from the performing, visual, media, design, and literary arts. These projects can be for any stage of the artistic process including creation, commissioning, presentations, touring, training, residencies, and access to the arts.   • Our Town

    Through project-based funding, Our Town supports projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes. Partnership is required between a local government entity and nonprofit organization, one of which must be a cultural organization; and should engage in partnership with other sectors.   • Partnership Agreements

    Partnership agreements support for state and jurisdictional arts agencies and regional arts organizations including private and nonprofit entities. All awards must be matched at least 1 to 1. Primarily, there are three types of grant programs: State Partnership Grant Program, Regional Partnership Grant Program and National Services Grant Program.

  • Research grants in the Arts

    Research Grants in the Arts offers support for projects in two areas: Track One: Value and Impact: projects that aim to examine the value and/or impact of the arts in any topic area(s) by using data and methods appropriate to the proposed research questions. Track Two: Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Designs: projects that aim to test the causal or inferred-causal impact of the arts on individual or cohort outcomes by using experimental or quasi-experimental design methods appropriate to the proposed research questions.     • Maximum award amount: For Track one - $10,000 to $30,000 and Track two - $30,000 to $100,000
