Message from the Dean

Dear CHSS Community:

I am excited to officially join the KSU community, especially the College of Humanities and Social Sciences! CHSS is a dynamic place of intellectual energy, student-centric approaches, and an outstanding community of faculty, staff and students.  I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as dean of the college.

I appreciate all the emails, calls, texts, and offers to assist me as I transitioned to Kennesaw State University.  These gestures of goodwill are indicative of the positive feelings that were evoked when I visited here a few months ago and convinced me that KSU is the right place for me.

First, a big hearty and appreciative thanks to Dr. Kerwin Swint for his outstanding leadership as Interim Dean of the college and for his generous assistance to me in this transition.  His insights have been invaluable and much appreciated.

Next, big thanks to the Dean’s office for all of their fantastic work during this transition and assisting me in my acclimation to the college.  The Associate Deans and staff in the college office are second to none and I look forward to working with everyone as we move the college forward.

My primary agenda this year is to listen, listen more, and listen to everyone.  I plan to visit every unit within the college and have a series of listen and learn opportunities with our vast and various stakeholders throughout the academic year.  As a brief preview, the college office will host several “meet and greet” receptions on various Friday evenings with targeted groups (e.g. staff, assistant professors, associate professors, lecturers, etc.) throughout the fall term. Additionally, I will host a number of student-focused drop-in sessions with our students tentatively called, “Arnold Palmers with the Dean” throughout the year.  These are informal, non-agenda chats with students about their experiences and how we can move forward as a college from the students’ perspective.

There are several exciting developments afoot in the college that I am happy to share with you at the Town Hall meeting on August 16th, 9:00-10:00 am in the Social Science Auditorium and throughout the year.  I look forward to working with you to make CHSS the most impactful College of Humanities and Social Sciences in the country.

See you soon!

Shawn
