Message from the Dean

Dear KSU friends and champions,

It is my honor to serve as the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Kennesaw State University (KSU) during this exciting time in its history.

As the largest college at KSU, CHSS serves as the foundational and intellectual core of the university.   With more than 7,000 graduate and undergraduate students, close to 500 faculty, 13 departments and schools, and an aggressive agenda to become a top Tier 2 Research Institution, we are the front gate of the university and we set the tone for what students come to expect from their KSU experience. With a deep sense of purpose and extraordinary precision, our outstanding and award-winning faculty are at the vanguard of developing innovative curriculum, state-of-the-field experiential learning opportunities, and prioritizing a problem-focused approach to their teaching and the students’ learning experience.

Many have heard me speak at length about our ambitious and exciting goals. However, our collective vision is quite simple: CHSS will be the most impactful college of humanities and social sciences in the country by 2025.

I am confident that we will produce the most future-ready and aptly-skilled graduates who are prepared to take on society’s most vexing and complex issues. The world is rapidly evolving and unforeseen problems will require global leaders who are nimble, holistic thinkers and problem solvers.

CHSS will prepare students to do more than think about issues. We will provide students with the essential and critical skills they need to contribute to society in a way that is not only effective, but transformative. CHSS will be known not only as the thinking college, but also as the doing college.

CHSS graduates will be equipped with real-world knowledge and experience gained through their project-based, collaborative learning; international study; and a cutting-edge curriculum that empowers students to explore talents and meld their core purpose into a successful life after graduation, including having a fulfilling career and being engaged citizens of the world. We will create the next generation of change agents and world leaders.

Over the next five years we will rapidly grow and evolve as a college.  We need all hands on deck as we pursue the ambitious goal of becoming the leader of colleges of liberal arts in the country within the decade. We will be calling on our external partners and key stakeholders to help us sharpen our focus as we endeavor to meet our lofty, but achievable, goals. Thank you in advance for your support, guidance and advocacy.

Please join us as we craft the future of humanities and social sciences in the country.

Yours in service,

Shawn D. Long
